Moving Parcul Carul to its oracle

„Humans are self-fencing, self-shepherding creatures. Wherever they live, they create parks around themselves. In city parks, national parks, provincial or state parks, eco-parks everywhere people must create for themselves rules according to which their comportment is to be governed.“ Peter Sloterdijk „Rules for the human park“ 1994.

Parcul Carul is an entity that could be imagined as a an ever preserved monument…or as a domesticated living being evolving continuously. Earthquakes, strategic bombings and autocratic urban reforms are part of the ecology of the Bucharest of the XX century. In the cold war period the entity called the city, had a heroic status in both capitalist and socialist storytelling.
The city is now been scripted in a different way. An example of this was the controversy that erupted 6 years ago, when the park was in danger and it needed to be „saved“. This controversy displayed a new way to script the park. An environmental approach was used to preserve the park as a public space, instead of continuously writing it down under the script of the needs of „national salvation“. The park has a story in itself of successions
and replacements, of public works, dead heroes, unknown soldiers, trees, animals, skaters, bacterias, etc.

How to describe the park as an ecology that goes beyond its stagnant „museification“ or the attempts to make it part of the succession of monumental „replacements“ in the city? A controversial coexistence between these populations should be scripted. We need to find how the park it is evolving, how it is moving, to catch their fluxes. One of the meanings of the word „theory“ was „a procession of ambassadors going to the oracle“. Can we reenact
that procession by building up a „spokesperson“ for the park? For that we will suspend the division between nature and culture and we will develop a holistic view of the park. Instead of following the „rules and regulations“, how to give us new interaction rules with the park? Trough collecting data by several consign guided fieldtrips, we will attempt to make a collective scripting of a spokesperson for the park in order to make it go to the
oracle.
